How the REA System Works
The REA Authority Pyramid represents the structured system that supports electrical safety and emergency readiness inside restaurants. Each level plays a role in creating a reliable, consistent national approach to electrical preparedness in commercial kitchens.

REA National Authority
At the top of the system is the Restaurant Electrical Authority, the organization responsible for establishing and maintaining the Electrical Emergency Readiness Standard (EERS) and overseeing the certification framework used by restaurants and electrical professionals.

REA defines the standards that guide electrical readiness practices across the restaurant industry.
REA Standards Council
The REA Standards Council is composed of experienced electrical professionals and industry advisors who help review, maintain, and improve the Electrical Emergency Readiness Standard.

This council ensures the REA standard evolves with real-world kitchen operations, electrical best practices, and emerging safety considerations.
REA Certified Electrical Readiness Inspectors
REA certifies qualified electrical professionals who are trained to evaluate restaurant electrical readiness using the EERS framework.

These independent inspectors verify compliance and help restaurants identify electrical risks that may require correction.
REA Partner Electricians
REA Partner Electricians are licensed electrical professionals who perform electrical corrections, upgrades, and improvements identified during readiness evaluations.

These electricians help restaurants maintain safe, reliable electrical systems that meet REA standard.
REA Certified Restaurants
Restaurants that implement the Electrical Emergency Readiness Standard and complete the certification process are recognized as REA Certified Restaurants.
Restaurant Managers & Staff
At the foundation of the system are restaurant managers and staff members who operate the kitchen daily.

Through REA training materials, emergency procedures, and hazard awareness programs, restaurant teams are equipped to recognize electrical risks and respond safely during electrical emergencies.
Why REA Exists
Restaurants already follow several important safety systems:

-
Health Department inspections
-
Fire suppression inspections
-
Hood cleaning programs
-
Food safety certifications
But until now, there has been no standardized system focused on electrical emergency readiness in commercial kitchens.
REA fills that gap.

The REA Authority System
The National Framework for Restaurant Electrical Readiness
Commercial kitchens operate in one of the most demanding electrical environments in any commercial building. Heat, moisture, grease, and continuous equipment use create electrical risks that can lead to equipment failure, kitchen shutdowns, or fire hazards.

The Restaurant Electrical Authority (REA) was created to establish a structured system that helps restaurants prepare for electrical emergencies and maintain safe electrical operations.

The REA Authority Pyramid illustrates how this system works by combining industry standards, certified professionals, and restaurant operational training into one coordinated safety framework.

REA Standards Council
The REA Standards Council serves as the governing body responsible for maintaining, reviewing, and improving the Electrical Emergency Readiness Standard (EERS) used by the Restaurant Electrical Authority.

The council ensures the REA standard remains.

The REA Standards Council is responsible for:

-
Approving updates to the EERS standard
-
Reviewing field feedback from inspectors and restaurants
-
Evaluating emerging electrical safety risks in commercial kitchens
-
Maintaining consistency across REA certification programs
-
protecting the integrity of the REA certification system

The council does not preform inspection or electrical work.
